AM II – Independent Reading Assignment

For this assignment, you will be using your independent reading books to demonstrate your knowledge and creatively represent the book’s story.  There are ­two parts to this assignment.

Part 1:
Answer the following questions about your book:
1.      What is your book about? Provide a two-paragraph summary of the plot.
2.      Who is your favorite character? In one paragraph explain why they are your favorite character.
3.      What is your opinion of the book? In one paragraph explain how you feel about the book and why.
4.      How does your book relate to American History? For this question, think about the following:
a.       Does the book surround a major historical event or time period?  What do you know about this time period?
b.      What is the setting of the book? Is that important?
c.       Does your book talk about major historical figures?  If so, who are they?

Part 2:
You must complete one of the following tasks using your book.  Be creative but also make sure that you show that you have read the book and understand it.

·         Design a book cover for the book.  This must contain:
o   The author’s name
o   An image (that you have designed) that goes along with the story
o   A summary/”teaser” for the book that is intended to interest someone in reading the book (~250 words)
o   Short biography of the author (~250 words)
·         An advertisement for the book. This must contain:
o   An image representing the book
o   4 one-sentence reviews of the book from critics (for example: “This book has changed my life forever” –NY Times)
o   A description of the plot that will intrigue or interest people (~250 words)
o   A longer review of the book that describes who the book is aimed for and how it connects to history (~250 words)
·         An extension of the story after your book has ended.  Basically, you are answering the question “Now what?” after the end of the book. This must be:
o   Creative
o   At least one page (single-spaced)
·         A companion story that goes with the book.  This can be a back-story to a character that we do not learn a lot about in the book.  This must be:
o   Creative
o   At least one page (single-spaced)
·         A comic book strip that acts out a major scene from the book.  This must be:
o   Creative
o   True to the plot
o   At least ten frames long
