Will Lincoln Prevail???

A snapshot from the days before the Civil War
--apparently the New York Times is covering the war as if in real-time, since this is the 150th anniversary (or sesquicentennial for all you word-nerds out there).

Read the Tony Horwitz piece, too, if you like. He makes a point that's dear to me--that Civil War haunts us, in part, because of its words.

And I hope you all had a safe and Happy Halloween!

  1. This Tony Horwitz piece reminds me of an issue that bothers me still today. He mentions fights still today over "flags and other emblems" of the civil war. These symbols of the confederate flag and col reb don't represent slavery and white supremacy but a monument to the people who died in that war. Even if the war was fought over a terrible cause these people still deserve to be remembered and honored. Alot of people are angry and ashamed about this war, and some still feel guilty for what there great grandfather + did. I think that is the most ignorant backward logic I have ever heard. Instead of treating each other equally and fairly they try to make up for something they aren't even responsible for. The civil war ended 150 years ago, why is there still racial tension over slavery when the anti slavery side won and it was abolished? There is nothing we can do to fix what slavery did, but its over now and we need to get over it if we are going to succeed as an nation.

p.s I thought the quarter ended on the 2nd so its late :(
